Patent issuance paves the way for
introduction of the technology to retail and OEM
markets.
MISSISSAUGA, ON,
Nov. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -
Pioneering Technology Corp. (TSXV:PTE; OTCBB:PTEFF),
("Pioneering" or the "Company"), an energy smart product
innovation and consumer goods company, announced today it has been
issued a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office
for its technology designed to help detect and diffuse burning
and/or smoking conditions in various cooking/heating appliances.
The patent will be issued on November 29,
2011.
This technology was developed to compliment Pioneering's patented
Safe-T-element product which is engineered to help prevent stove
top cooking fires, (the number one cause of household fires,
accounting for over 40% of all household fires in North America annually). This new technology
offers potential product applications to help prevent fires in the
remaining 60% of residential building fires each year (as recently
reported by the US Fire Administration) that are not caused by
stove-top cooking. There are over 375,000 of these types of fires
reported to fire departments each year in the U.S. resulting in
over $7 billion in direct and
indirect costs annually (only 1 in 10 of these fires are
reported).
The first commercial application of this now patented platform
technology is an innovative new product called the Safe-T-sensor
created to help mitigate the many fires and false alarms caused by
microwave ovens. Originally introduced on university campuses in
the summer of 2010 this product is designed to detect burning
conditions within the microwave and to interrupt power to the
microwave before it causes a fire or triggers a fire alarm.
A study completed in 2010 by Ohio
University and their local fire department found that the
majority of the fire department's over 100 nuisance alarms on
campus each year were caused by burnt food in microwave ovens. It
was estimated that there was a total cost of over $2,000 per fire department run made to the
campus. Ohio University recently
reported a 92% reduction in fire department responses, versus the
same period the previous year after installing 4,479 Safe-T-sensors
on microwave ovens in residential housing across campus.
While the Safe-T-sensor was initially introduced to university
campuses, fire department responses to false alarms are an everyday
occurrence across North America
beyond just university campuses. False alarms and the associated
nuisance calls have a very disruptive effect, resulting in building
evacuations, fire alarm apathy and loss of productivity meaning
there are both significant human and financial costs. The
Safe-T-sensor is now being purchased by hospitals, senior's
facilities and large corporations where evacuations caused by false
alarms create dangerous situations for patients/tenants and have a
significant impact on workplace productivity.
It is estimated that there are approximately 90 million households
in the U.S. with microwaves and the number of households that own
more than one unit is growing. In addition, microwave ovens are
present in college dorms, commercial offices, hospitals, senior's
facilities, restaurants, convenience stores and extended stay
motels. According to the Association of Home Appliance
Manufacturers, approximately 9 million new microwaves are sold each
year representing a $1.4 billion
market annually. According to the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA), microwave ovens are involved in 2,100 home
structure fires per year and are responsible for more emergency
room injury visits than any other cooking device.
The issuance of this patent coupled with the safe-T-sensor's
growing awareness and obvious product benefits paves the way for
launching this innovative microwave application at retail and to
introducing it to original equipment manufacturers in an effort to
having the technology incorporated at source. Pioneering actively
protects all of its ongoing developments with patents and patents
pending.
