Chairman's AGM Statement
FirstBus Chairman, Trevor Smallwood, at the Company's Annual General Meeting
today in London, will say:
"Trading in the first three months of the year has been ahead of the same
period last year and the Group has turned in a satisfactory performance.
Our Greater Manchester subsidiary is performing well despite the slower than
expected return to bus usage after the disruption in the city centre in June
1996. We continue to appeal the MMC decision on divestment in Scotland,
announced in January, in the light of a significant increase in competition
since then. Our two most recent acquisitions, Great Eastern Railway and
CentreWest, are both trading ahead of our initial expectations.
The Group's growth prospects in its existing businesses are good and we
recognise the potential to grow passenger numbers supported by partnerships
with local authorities and the Government's commitment to public transport."
