               BIRKBY PLC - GRANT OF OPTIONS TO DIRECTORS

On 2nd January 1998 Birkby PLC (the "Company") granted options under the
Birkby  Executive Share Option Scheme (the "Scheme") to  the  undernoted
Directors  (the  "Directors")  over the following  numbers  of  ordinary
shares of 5p each:

Mr K D S Taylor-Smith                   50,000

The price payable on the exercise of an option is 156p per share.

The  options  are exercisable between 3 and 10 years from  the  date  of
grant.

The  total number of shares over which options are held by the Directors
under the Scheme following this notification are:

Mr K D S Taylor-Smith      268,200
