Kroger Reminds Customers About Food Safety When There Is a Power Outage

PR Newswire (US)
CINCINNATI, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Kroger Co. today
reminds everyone to be cautious of food in home freezers and
refrigerators when there is an extended power outage. The Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) and the Cincinnati Health Department
guidelines advise consumers that if the doors are kept closed, food
in a full freezer will usually be safe for about two days and food
in a half-full freezer for about 24 hours. A properly working
refrigerator should keep food safely cold for about 4 hours if the
doors are kept closed. Refrigerated food should be kept at or below
40 degrees Fahrenheit. Frozen food should remain at or below 0
degrees Fahrenheit. When the power returns, consumers should check
the temperature in their freezer and refrigerator. If a thermometer
has not been kept in the freezer, check each package of food to
determine its safety. The consumer should not rely on appearance or
odor. The FDA advises: when in doubt, throw it out. For more
information, consumers can visit:
http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/fsdisas.html As of 1 p.m. Monday,
Kroger has 49 stores open in Cincinnati in the locations listed on
the following pages. "We appreciate the tremendous efforts of our
associates to do everything they can to serve our customers during
this time of disruption," said Geoffrey Covert, President of the
Cincinnati-Dayton division of Kroger. Some Kroger stores in the
metropolitan areas of Columbus, Louisville, and Cincinnati, and
some stores in Houston are closed due to power outages. The Company
is working as quickly as possible to reopen stores as power becomes
available. The Company makes food safety our first priority in
assessing store conditions when power is restored. "We follow the
same advice we give to consumers ... when in doubt, we will throw
it out," said Mr. Covert. Kroger has begun raising funds for
American Red Cross hurricane relief efforts in stores in several
regions of the country. The company will provide a limited matching
grant for funds raised from associates and customers. Cincinnati
