     UNILEVER SHAREHOLDER MEETING TO CONSIDER SHARE SPLIT
                               
The extraordinary general meeting of shareholders of Unilever
PLC, to consider the Board's proposed four-for-one share
split, will be held at Unilever House, Blackfriars, London
EC4, at 0930 on Monday September 22 1997.

The notice convening this meeting of shareholders, together
with a letter from Niall FitzGerald, chairman of Unilever PLC,
advising how the share split affects them, is being mailed
today, Tuesday August 26.

The proposal to sub-divide existing 5p ordinary shares into
four shares of l.25p each was announced by the Board on August
1 as a means of reducing the weight of the share price whilst
preserving the level of the company's reserves.

If agreed by shareholders, and subject to Stock Exchange
consent, the sub-division of shares will take place on Monday
October 13 and dealings in the 1.25p shares will commence that
day.

An extraordinary general meeting of Unilever N.V.
shareholders, for the purpose of sub-dividing the FL. 4
ordinary shares into four Fl. 1 ordinary shares, will also be
held on September 22 1997.
