Plantic Granted US Patent for Impact Resistant Sheet
Melbourne, Australia - 26 April 2010 - Plantic Technologies has been granted
their fifth US Patent to protect the technology behind its new rigid sheet
material with improved impact resistance. This new product is targeted at
packaging products over a broader range of environmental conditions.
Plantic's new and improved impact sheet grade, Plantic XE1, is a further
addition to their environmentally friendly range of packaging materials. XE1
enhances the existing functional properties of the current rigid sheet range
(Plantic R1 & HP1) and offers packaging companies a range of options to suit
their product requirements.
Required for packaging a wider range of food products, this new grade offers
improved impact performance over a broader range of environmental conditions.
This expands the use of Plantic material for a wider range of food products, or
for use where environmental conditions are more extreme (for example display
packaging in hotter or drier climates). Currently completing compliance testing
for regulatory approval in Europe, XE1 is particularly suited for applications
which require improved impact and Food Contact Approval
Early customer evaluation of Plantic XE1 in our European Applications
Development Centre, based in Jena, Germany, has generated a lot of interest
across a broad range of applications.
This new material is the result of Plantic's ongoing research and development
program to deliver new and improved products to meet the ever increasing demands
and challenges of our customers.
Plantic XE1 is made from a non-genetically modified renewable resource, high
amylose corn starch, supplied by our raw material and development partner
National Starch. Like Plantic R1 & HP1, XE1 also has a renewable bio-content of
more than 80 percent.
Plantic's CEO, Mr. Brendan Morris, said, "This improved impact sheet grade
further expands our range of sustainable, renewable and competitively priced
alternatives to conventional plastics.
"Plantic XE1 will give our customers more choice in selecting environmentally
friendly materials that will perform well in demanding packaging applications.
The combined features of improved impact performance over a wider range of
conditions will allow our customers to provide a broader range of sustainable
packaged products."
Using Plantic sustainable packaging as an alternative to conventional,
petrochemical plastics gives manufactures a dramatic improvement in their
environmental impact. Plantic sustainable packaging uses less than 50% of the
energy, and up to 70% less green house gas emissions, of traditional plastic.
