                            BOARD CHANGES AT PORTMAN

The Portman Building Society has announced that Lord Stewartby and Rosie Barnes
retired as Non-Executive Directors of the Society on 30 June 2002.

The Portman's Chairman John Roques said, "Throughout their time on the Portman
Board both Ian and Rosie have made a significant contribution to the Portman,
during a period of significant and excellent growth for the Society. I would
like to thank them for their commitment to the Portman and wish them well with
their future plans."
