SGI Showcases New Open IT Platform and Systems Integration Expertise for Enhanced Broadcast and Production Productivity at NAB 2005 New Silicon Graphics Prism Platform to Drive Sony 4K Projector MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Leveraging its leadership in providing Information Technology (IT) infrastructures when IT broadcast first began in Europe and IT-based post-production workflows first began in the U.S., Silicon Graphics (NYSE:SGI) comes to NAB 2005, April 18-21 in Las Vegas, with a new open IT platform for Media. Based on Intel(R) Itanium(R) 2 processors and running the 64-bit Linux(R) operating system, the Silicon Graphics Prism(TM) platform will make its debut driving one of only a few Sony(R) SXRD 4K projectors at the show in SGI Booth SL1943. In a main stage presentation, SGI will showcase 4K content and four streams of HD to the 4K projector as well as real-time graphics generated on the Silicon Graphics system directly to the projector in 4K resolution. SGI Professional Services projects showcasing designs and integration in networked editing, multichannel broadcast playout, IT centric broadcast and shared SAN infrastructure for digital intermediates will also be highlighted in customer case study displays around the booth. SGI expects to work with non-linear editing, asset management, color grading, video server and other software application companies as well as systems integrators to provide the SGI open IT platform as the foundation on which they can build their products and solutions. For broadcasters, the SGI open IT platform will offer the possibility of a fully integrated, multi-channel broadcast media gateway for ingest, editing and archiving. In post-production, the Silicon Graphics Prism platform will dramatically increase performance in data-intense creative processes, such as special effects requiring massive data models, high-resolution finishing, and highly interactive, digital intermediate sessions. New Technology Area: Content Creation -- All the Way to 4K SGI has extended its success and capability in providing infrastructure solutions for Digital Intermediates to 4K. In the New Technology Area for Content Creation in the booth, SGI will demonstrate "All the Way to 4K" and discuss the three primary elements of the Silicon Graphics Prism platform that make it unique-Itanium 2 processors, multi-pipe ATI graphics processors (GPUs) and Reconfigurable Application-Specific Computing (RASC) with Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FGPAs): -- The Power of Itanium 2 processors will be demonstrated by Next Limit RealFlow3 64-bit Linux Fluid Dynamic and Particle Simulation Renderer. To complete a 10 Million particle system render, Next Limit found it takes only 4 days on Silicon Graphics Prism, compared to 3 weeks on a 32-bit Linux cluster. -- SGI expertise in scalable graphics applied to open commodity GPUs. Interactive Effects (IFX) will demonstrate 4K Playout: based on IFX Piranha(TM) code-base ported to 64-bit Linux. -- By directly connecting FGPAs to global shared memory in Silicon Graphics Prism, RASC allows application developers to program to the best of three building blocks offered by processors, graphics pipelines, and FPGAs. RASC processors are being programmed for codecs and image processing, watermarking, motion estimation, and data conversion. SGI will demonstrate Sobel Edge Detection -- Image Processing through a 4K data path. New Technology Area: Content Management The New Technology Area will highlight SGI(R) InfiniteStorage systems, SGI(R) InfiniteStorage Shared Filesystem CXFS(TM) and Data Migration Facility (DMF) integration through new API for DMF. -- Ardendo Content Management architecture interfaced to CXFS and DMF -- Applicable in Broadcast and Production Workflows -- SGI(R) InfiniteStorage RM660 storage for real-time, high-performance demands of Media Customers in use for demonstrations -- SGI(R) InfiniteStorage TP9700 storage showing direction towards 4Gb Fibre Channel storage SGI Systems Integration for Customer Workflows Throughout the booth SGI will showcase how its customers have benefited from workflow enhancements integrated by SGI Professional Services in 2004. These installations highlight SGI systems integration with SGI and partner products. -- Networked editing: NBA -- SGI designed and implemented an IT infrastructure that included 15 Pinnacle Liquid blue editing suites and 8TB SGI(R) InfiniteStorage Network Attached Storage (NAS) system in an MXF environment serving 150 freelance editors producing nightly highlight reels -- Multichannel broadcast playout: Crawford Communications -- SGI worked with MassTech, Omnibus and Omneon to consolidate workflow and storage for 40 redundant full-time cable network clients -- IT centric broadcast: EuroNews -- Airing 24/7, with dozens of news feeds constantly being taken down, and stories edited and re-transmitted in 12 languages. With SGI Professional Services, this European broadcaster transitioned from a totally video-centric facility to a data-centric facility in a matter of weeks, and increased their efficiency over 150 percent. -- Shared SAN infrastructure for digital intermediates: EFILM -- EFILM and SGI technology have revolutionized the feature film finishing business, transforming the concept of Digital Intermediate workflow into a routine daily operation touching every single frame of virtually every big-budget film.
