Appointment of Non-executive Director

Oxford Instruments plc, the advanced instrumentation group, today announced
the appointment of Mr. Nigel Keen as a non-executive director, with effect
immediately.

Nigel Keen, 52, is Chairman of the Cygnus group of companies, established in
1984. He is Deputy Chairman of The Laird Group plc and is Chairman of both
Shield Diagnostics Group plc and Deltex Medical Holdings Ltd.

Sir Peter Williams, Chairman of Oxford Instruments plc commented today :

       "I am delighted Nigel has joined our Board. He has wide experience of 
        high technology companies, both public and private and is Deputy 
        Chairman of a major engineering group. With his financial background 
        and knowledge of the healthcare and technology marketplace, he
