Birkby  plc  (the "Company") has today been notified that following  the
sale  of  350,000 Ordinary Shares of 5p each, as at 8 July 1998  Mercury
Asset Management Limited ("MAM") does not have a notifiable interest  in
the Company.

The  following companies, being holding companies of MAM, no longer have
an interest as previously disclosed:-
