Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) has halted the sale of versions of the Nintendo Co. Ltd. (NTDOY, 7974.TO) 3DS gaming device, placing the item under review after customer complaints.

In a message displayed on the 3DS product page, the online retailer says "customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here."

Amazon added that it's working to "fix the problem as quickly as possible."

Amazon and Nintendo representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Nintendo and rival Sony Corp. (SNE, 6758.TO) have sought to beat back competition from smartphones capable of supporting powerful games with handheld devices such as the 3DS, which sells on Amazon for $250.

Nintendo launched the 3DS in March.

In midday trading, Amazon shares were up 0.9% at $214.52.
