AAI Corporation Wins Level 4 Certification from Defense Department's Software Engineering Institute HUNT VALLEY, Md., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- AAI Corporation, a leading manufacturer of electronic simulation training systems, automated aircraft test and maintenance equipment, and other software-intensive defense products, has been assessed at Level 4 of the U.S. Defense Department's Software Engineering Institute (SEI) Capability Maturity Model (CMM). The company, a subsidiary of United Industrial Corporation (NYSE:UIC), won the higher rating only 10 months after achieving SEI's Level 3 status for software maturity. SEI is a federally-funded research and development center sponsored by the Defense Department (DoD) and operated by Carnegie Mellon University. The institute provides the technical leadership to advance software engineering so that DoD can acquire and sustain its software-intensive systems with predictable and improved cost, schedule, and quality. "The SEI-CMM is the most widely used yardstick in industry for software process improvement," explained Gary Coggins, AAI's director of engineering. "The 10-month transition to Level 4 shaves 16 months off the average transition time of 26 months." Level 4 -- known as the Managed Level -- requires that software processes be conducted and products developed with numerical planning, tracking, and control at a detailed level. Fewer than 13 percent of assessed DoD contractor sites operate at or above the SEI-CMM Level 4. "Achieving Level 4 puts AAI in the top tier of companies in terms of demonstrated maturity of software processes," Coggins noted. "Increasingly, DoD is mandating at least Level 3 certification in order to be a prime contractor or major subcontractor on military programs."
