Union Pacific Corp. will build a grain transload facility at a major Illinois terminal, a move that will increase distribution opportunities for agricultural producers, the railroad company said Thursday.

The facility will be located within Union Pacific's Global IV intermodal terminal in Joliet, Ill. Products will arrive at the facility by truck, where they will be loaded into intermodal marine shipping containers and sent by rail to West Coast ports. From there, the containers can be shipped overseas.

The program will improve the infrastructure connecting ocean carriers with agricultural producers, Union Pacific said.

Construction began in April and will be completed by the fourth quarter, the company said. The facility will be able to process 50,000 containers a year when fully operational.
