Marsh & McLennan Cos. (MMC) said Tuesday that third-quarter net profit and revenue rose.

The New York-based professional-services firm earned a quarterly profit of $303 million, or 59 cents a share, compared with $276 million, or 54 cents, for the same period last year.

Excluding items, the company reported an adjusted profit of 77 cents a share for the quarter, compared with 78 cents last year and analysts' forecasts of 70 cents, according to FactSet.

Revenue rose to $3.97 billion from $3.50 billion.

"Our year-to-date results position us well for a solid year," Chief Executive Dan Glaser said.
