Server shipments grew in the first quarter in every world region
but Japan, driving double-digit revenue growth for most equipment
vendors, according to the industry research company Gartner
Inc.
Shipments increased 8.5% from a year earlier, Gartner said,
while vendor revenue grew 17%.
Market-share leaders Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ), International
Business Machines Corp. (IBM) and Dell Inc. (DELL) posted sales
increases of 13%, 23% and 13%, respectively. No. 4 Oracle Corp.
(ORCL) reported 34% revenue growth, while Fujitsu Ltd. (FJTSY)
suffered an 8.3% sales decline.
Eastern Europe led growth with a 21% shipment increase, pushing
vendor revenue up 36% in the region.
"Following earlier trends, the x86-based server market provided
an increase in average selling prices that pushed revenue higher
than shipments, and this was the case in the first quarter for all
regions," Gartner researcher Jeffrey Hewitt said.
