Dell Services Collaborating with VMware and Other Partners to Deliver a Mobile Clinical Computing Solution to MEDITECH Users

Business Wire
Dell Services has launched a Mobile Clinical Computing (MCC)
solution for hospitals and health care organizations that use the
MEDITECH Health Care Information System, enabling a simplification
and automation of IT operations. The solution leverages VMware®
View and Forward Advantage im-one API management with Imprivata®
OneSign® Single Sign-On (SSO) technology to help deliver secure
virtual desktop solutions for healthcare enterprises.
Mobile Clinical Computing (MCC) for MEDITECH is based on a
Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) that is designed for fast,
flexible deployment of virtual desktops in hospitals and their
extended communities. The design includes VMware vSphere™ and
VMware View™ as well as servers, optimized storage, networking, and
security in a reference architecture that can be tailored to meet
customer needs.
Dell works collaboratively with customers to develop a custom
design and deployment plan that works best for them. Customers have
the option of integrating the model into their existing data center
technology or operating in the Dell Services cloud technology
model. Key elements of the solution include VMware View's
management of roaming sessions along with convenient access through
Imprivata's OneSign application and Forward Advantage's API
integration with the MEDITECH HCIS for utilizing advanced
authentication devices for e-signature actions.
An additional benefit of the MCC for MEDITECH solution is that
the virtual desktop is designed to eliminate the need for local
storage, helping to dramatically reduce the risk of a security
breach and the resulting consequences for the organization. This
feature can be important given the recent strengthening of HIPAA
rules by the HITECH Act.

“Managing clinical and administrative desktops is one of our
biggest issues. By implementing MCC for MEDITECH, we hoped to
reduce our help desk calls for our PC clients as well as provide
remote access for the physician offices. By deploying virtual
desktops and implementing a solution that simplifies and automates
IT operations, we have resolved many of these challenges.” --
Patrick von Wiegen, Information Systems, Yukon Hospital

“One of the top pain points for virtually every healthcare CIO
involves managing clinical and administrative desktops. PC client
issues strain otherwise carefully-deployed healthcare enterprise
applications and can hinder adoption of advanced clinical software.
Deploying secure virtual desktops can resolve many of these
challenges by utilizing VMware View™ to create a desktop and
application design that simplifies and automates IT operations,
while also reducing the risk of security breaches that plague local
storage.” -- Peter Stone, vice president and general manager of
the MEDITECH Solutions Group within Dell Services
“Through our partnership with Dell Services, we are helping
healthcare organizations achieve a ‘meaningful use’ level for their
electronic medical records deployments that encourages technology
adoption and facilitates workflows attractive to clinicians.
Working together to fully integrate and optimize an always-on,
point-of-care desktop environment for MEDITECH, VMware and Dell can
significantly improve caregiver workflows and help organizations
facilitate better patient care.” -- Christopher Young, vice
president and general manager, End User Computing, VMware
“Secure virtual desktops are particularly advantageous in
healthcare, where users are heavily-reliant on roaming sessions,
fast workflows, and shared workstations. With MCC for MEDITECH we
are changing the way doctors and nurses access data by providing
“one touch” secure roaming for fast access to patient information
at their fingertips – from any workstation or thin client.” --
Barry Chaiken, MD, CMO, Imprivata
