Business Wire
AirNet Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: ANCC), the technology
leader in software defined base station products for wireless
communications, today announced that it has been showcasing the
capabilities of the RapidCell base station at various locations in
the U.S. for a Government Communications end user. An undisclosed,
leading OEM aerospace and defense contractor who has purchased
RapidCell base stations has paid AirNet to help conduct these
"mini" field trials. End user personnel have been utilizing the
base stations in a variety of different simulations and exercises.
In one field trial, the OEM has integrated the RapidCell base
station with their situational awareness system offering. Deployed
inside a tent with a portable external, telescoping mast and
antenna, the RapidCell base station provides the backbone for a
rapidly deployable, highly reliable wireless voice and data network
that streams real time position, location and tracking information
to a control center for viewing using 3-D visualization and
graphics. The RapidCell SDR product architecture enables operators
to quickly and easily configure an operational network "on the
fly". At the other field trial, the OEM has leveraged the flexible
SDR architecture of AirNet's RapidCell base station to quickly
implement proprietary frequency changes via software-only
modifications, enabling personnel to operate in a government
frequency band without interfering with other equipment in adjacent
commercial frequency bands. "The RapidCell base station has
performed flawlessly in both of these field trials," said Thomas R.
Schmutz, Vice President of Engineering for AirNet Communications.
"Our solution continues to receive good visibility and gain
traction with key decision makers and planners. Our expectation is
that additional orders may be on the near horizon with this
customer and they want us to have the capability of building and
configuring their RapidCell base stations for immediate
deployment." AirNet will continue to support the OEM Defense
contractor in its marketing campaign to build awareness and
interest in its product. At the same time, AirNet will continue to
evaluate and upgrade capabilities through the addition of new
software features. "Because of our SDR architecture, we were
literally able in one week to support the requested software
changes to our product and participate in the field trial on short
notice," said Terry Williams, Chief Technical Officer for AirNet
Communications. "Our strategy is to continue to open the door for
AirNet to demonstrate the robust capabilities of the RapidCell base
station in rugged field environments, and work with our OEM
supplier to convert these opportunities into new business." The
RapidCell base station solves the problem of quickly deploying a
reliable communications system, whenever and wherever it is needed.
When used with the AirSite(R) Backhaul Free(TM) base stations,
AirNet's customers will have the capability of flexibly deploying
high capacity, secure multi-frequency GSM communications across a
large or small geographical coverage area. About AirNet AirNet
Communications Corporation is a leader in wireless base stations
and other telecommunications equipment that allow service operators
to cost-effectively and simultaneously offer high-speed wireless
data and voice services to mobile subscribers. AirNet's patented
broadband, software-defined AdaptaCell(R) SuperCapacity(TM)
adaptive array base station solution provides a high-capacity base
station with a software upgrade path to high-speed data. The
Company's RapidCell(TM) base station provides government
communications users with up to 96 voice and data channels in a
compact, rapidly deployable design capable of processing multiple
GSM protocols simultaneously. The Company's AirSite(R) Backhaul
Free(TM) base station carries wireless voice and data signals back
to the wireline network, eliminating the need for a physical
backhaul link, thus reducing operating costs. AirNet has 67 patents
issued or filed and has received the coveted World Award for Best
Technical Innovation from the GSM Association, representing over
400 operators around the world. More information about AirNet may
