An investor might buy just a few shares in the after-market at a significantly higher price than the day’s closing price due to the following reasons:

1. Testing Liquidity & Price Movement
• Some traders place small orders to gauge supply and demand in after-hours trading.
• If their small buy is filled at a much higher price, they may reconsider making a larger purchase.

2. Low Liquidity & Wide Spreads
• After-hours trading has fewer participants, leading to wider bid-ask spreads.
• A small market order could execute at a much higher price than expected due to limited sellers.

3. Urgency & FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
• An investor may believe a stock will gap up at the next open and rush to buy, even at a premium.
• They might buy a small amount first to secure a position before committing more capital.

4. Market Manipulation or Testing Stop-Loss Levels
• Some traders use small trades to artificially move the price, triggering stop-losses or buy signals.
• This could encourage larger investors to react, creating a self-fulfilling price movement.

5. Retail Investor Behavior
• A retail investor may mistakenly place a market order instead of a limit order, resulting in a high fill price.
• New investors might not be aware of after-hours trading risks.

If an investor’s small after-hours buy is filled at a much higher price, they might consider a larger purchase for several reasons:

1. Confirmation of Demand & Momentum
• A higher fill price might indicate strong buying pressure, suggesting the stock could continue rising.
• Investors may see this as a bullish signal and decide to buy more before the price increases further.

2. Limited Selling Pressure & Low Liquidity
• If a small order executes at a higher price due to low liquidity, the investor might believe that larger institutions will step in when the market reopens, pushing the price even higher.
• They might be willing to pay a premium now rather than risk an even higher open price.

3. Strategic Accumulation
• Some investors buy in small increments to avoid moving the price too much at once.
• If the initial small buy executes at a high price but still sees buying interest, they may continue accumulating shares in stages.

4. Fear of Missing Out (FOMO)
• If the investor believes the stock is about to experience a major breakout, they might accept the high price as a cost of getting in early.
• This often happens when positive news is released after market close.

5. Stop-Loss or Buy Signal Triggers
• Some traders place small orders to test price levels and see if automated buy orders (such as stop-limit or momentum-based buys) get triggered.
• If these orders activate, they may feel more confident about increasing their position.

It may have been just TC’s 5 o’clock Charlie playing with our minds again. Who knows.

Somebody apparently got squeezed out to pay $40+ over closing price. IMHO.

The names I listed are just from two pages of mickey’s posts. He posted over 8,000 times thru the years. I’m sure you’re on another page of his.

ciciagt,

I am surprised my name is not on your list. I bot my IDCC shares in 1995 to 1998 and have been on all the boards for years.

The after hours move prompted me to look up mickey’s “to da moon” mantra. In just two of his pages back around 2003, these long time investor names appeared. I recognize them all. They’d be impressed at IDCC today. Some are still here, and there’s certainly lots of other names we old timers recognize. The pages I read didn’t have an LaRanger post, but sure glad Gamco acknowledges his o’reenos! Here’s to many more o’reenos in 2025.

The convertible bonds are all offset by the calls IDCC owns and the $460 million principal IDCC will pay back in cash.  There wasn't any share increase due to convertible bonds with the 2024 bonds that were recently settled.  The 500,000 share dilution was due to the warrants IDCC issued with them.  IDCC payed the $126 million principal for the 2024 bonds in cash and covered the rest with the calls they had. If you'd read the annual and quarterly reports you would know this.

The  3 million shares that IDCC would currently owe to cover the warrants may be used in their calculations, but who knows.

Does anyone have any insight concerning the recent change in "Institutional Ownership"? For numerous months, the Institutional Ownership was reported by most services to be 103% of the outstanding shares. I had believed that this was a result of the over-sized short position in IDCC. However the monthly average of shorts has been cut in half during the past 7 to 8 months. In recent days the Institutional Ownership is being reported to be around 107.34% (Yahoo) to 108.99% (brokerage). What is being reported as Institutional Ownership in the brokerage services that you have access to?
Could it be that the Convertible Bond holders have authorized their intention to convert their bond but IDCC may NOT be obligated to transfer the shares until the bond issue matures? And those bond holders that have converted are now reporting those share holdings as though it were restricted shares that are being held by an institution? I'm asking, because I don't profess to know.

At todays price you have another 3 million shares in dilution for the warrants included with the 2027 Notes.  More than enough shares to cover those shorts. The 2024 notes cost the company about 500,000 shares of dilution on top of the interest and the cost of hedging. Some pretty damn expensive financing for a loan they didn't need if you ask me.
