          ROYAL BANK OF CANADA ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTOR

TORONTO, July 11, 2001 - Royal Bank of Canada announced today the appointment of
Cecil W. Sewell, Jr. to its Board of Directors. Mr. Sewell is Chairman Emeritus
of RBC Centura Banks, Inc. headquartered in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Prior
to the acquisition of Centura Banks, Inc. by Royal Bank of Canada on June 5,
2001, Mr. Sewell served as the Chief Executive Officer of Centura Banks and its
parent company Centura Banks, Inc.
