The head of Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Xbox 360 videogame business in Japan said Friday that its motion-control Kinect device hasn't sold as many units as expected in Japan so far and is "still not widely recognized."

But Takashi Sensui said he expects Microsoft's upcoming new Windows operating system, which supports Xbox Live online gaming, will boost the Xbox brand in Japan and will help lift sales of the game console as well as the motion-control accessory.

"To be honest, Kinect's sales haven't met our initial expectations in Japan, but we have received good reviews from the people who have used it," he said, adding that he hopes upcoming Kinect-compatible dance and sports software titles will broaden its customer base.

Sensui also said that the upcoming operating system won't diminish the importance of the Xbox 360 as a dedicated game console.

The new operating system has so far been referred to as Windows 8.
