ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Energy Conversion Devices, Inc. (ECD Ovonics) (NASDAQ:ENER) today announced that it has received a contract totaling approximately $1.3M from the United States Display Consortium (USDC) to develop a high-resolution roll-to-roll optical inspection system for flexible web display substrates. This high-resolution inspection system will be able to detect web and pattern defects, and particulate contamination as small as one micrometer, on flexible web substrates up to 24 inches wide. ECD Ovonics' Production Technology and Machine-Building Division will provide a precision roll-to-roll web handling and optical positioning system for this program, and will team with Integral Vision, Inc., which will supply the vision optics and data handling software. This contract is part of USDC's ongoing program to develop a complete tool set for roll-to-roll manufacturing of flexible displays and electronics. This high-resolution roll-to-roll vision system will provide a key component for high production yields that is currently missing in the flexible electronics industry. This contract capitalizes on ECD Ovonics' proven expertise and experience in roll-to-roll semiconductor and high-tech manufacturing. The award follows an earlier USDC contract to ECD to develop flexible stainless steel substrates for display and electronics manufacturing.
