                     New Chief appointed to run Woolworths big W

Woolworths Group plc today announced a further strengthening of Woolworths plc
management team with the appointment of Jonathan Hart who will become Managing
Director of the out-of-town Woolworths big W store format.

Jonathan Hart, 41, has a strong retail background, his career includes two years
at Tesco plc and fourteen years at Dixons Group plc. At Dixons Group he held a
number of senior roles including Managing Director of the Dixons Chain and Group
Managing Director for Dixons, The Link and PC World. During his time at Currys
he drove the expansion of the megastore business.

Jonathan left the Dixons Group in 2000 to become Chief Executive of ITM 
Communications, the internet company.

Trevor Bish-Jones, Woolworths Group plc Chief Executive, said, "I am delighted
we have been able to attract someone of Jonathan's experience and calibre. He
joins us on 11 June which will give him an immediate opportunity to make a
valuable contribution to the current review of the big W format, the fastest
growing part of our Group.

Jonathan takes over from Bob Hetherington who has made a tremendous contribution
to our company over the last three years. We thank him for this and wish him
