    The Wellcome Trust announces that its Annual Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 30 September 2008 have been approved.  

    The net investment base (after bond liabilities) of the Wellcome Trust Group fell to �13.1 billion at 30 September 2008, compared with
�15.1 billion at 30 September 2007.  The overall investment return was a negative return of 10.8% during the financial year (2007: positive
return of 17.0%).  Approximately 50% of the portfolio was invested in cash, bonds and quoted equities.  Cash and short-term bonds were
valued at �1.3 billion.  

    Charitable commitments of the Group were increased to a record level of �702 million during the year, compared with �520 million for the
previous year.  

    Wellcome Trust Finance plc also announces that its Annual Report and Financial Statements for the year ended 30 September 2008 have been
approved. At 30 September 2008, its total assets were �682 million (2007: �682 million), with net assets of �137.5 million (2007: �137.5
million). 

    The 2008 Annual Reports and Financial Statements of the Wellcome Trust and Wellcome Trust Finance plc will be available in January 2009
