CHORUS MOTORS PLC COM NPV

Chorus Motors has trading number, but it does not trade because there is no market maker. Chorus is really about to become very valuable..."about" as measured in years. It owns the vast majority of Wheel Tug (WT). WT is putting electric motors in the nose wheels of 737s and later A320s. In 2020 it will likely apply to the FAA to certify the WT system.

By saving much time at the gate and saving jet engine wear and a few other virtues, WT will save the airlines a great deal of money. The savings will likely be enough to radically change the profit picture of airlines that fly a plane several times a day.

BOREALIS owns much of Chorus. It is in the process of going private and all its assets will be held under Borealis Holdings (BH). A share of BOREF can be traded for Borealis Holdings.

Sometime next year BH will be traded on a "private exchange" only. Later, Chorus Motors and WT likely also will be traded this way.

So Chorus will not go back to being publically traded. But effective ownership in it and WT may still be accessed by buying BOREF on the pink sheets and exchanging it sometime in future years for BH. When WT reaches significant positive cash flow, maybe in 5 years, dividends are likely to be paid to WT, Chorus and BH. So one would want to do any exchange of BOREF to BH before then so as not to miss these dividends.

The stated reason for moving these companies private is to avoid needing to announce financial reports publically.

A Not Totally New Idea After All

by DEAN SIGLER on 03/22/2012

Delos Aerospace patented an electric landing gear system as early as 2007, according to their web site. Steven Sullivan, an alert blog reader, provided the following lead for your editor.

Delos says, “This revolutionary technology is a total systems integration of a fully electric landing gear and maneuvering system wherein axial flux disk motor/generators replace the old friction disk technology providing increased braking and maneuvering capability to the aircraft wherein there are many engineering benefits to eliminating the heat generated within friction based braking systems.”

Use of these brakes could reduce takeoff distances and increase range by reducing fuel weight otherwise required for takeoff and cruise. Power would come from an auxiliary power unit (APU), currently part of most large jet aircraft, that would generate electricity to allow the wheels to “drive” the airplane from its parking space to the runway for takeoff, or on landing to take the airplane down the taxiway to its concourse gate. These maneuvers alone could cut fuel weight by 1,200 pounds on the average airliner, and by up to 4,000 pounds on cross-continent or intercontinental “heavies.”

AVTO METALS RECEIVES PATENT FOR QUANTUM TRANSISTOR

Gibraltar, 7 April 2011

Avto Metals plc has received a U.S. patent for a new type of quantum transistor that
could make possible smaller, more powerful electronic devices of all sorts. The
technology uses a recently-discovered quantum interference effect that will enable
transformation of existing materials into materials with precisely-defined properties
for almost any electronic application.

"This fundamental improvement in the underlying physics of transistors should
translate to more advanced electronic devices of all kinds that are more reliable,
faster, and ultimately cheaper," said Isaiah W. Cox, president of Avto Metals plc,
which is developing the technology

The new patent, U.S. 7,893,422, titled "Transistor on the Basis of New Quantum
Interference Effect," reflects discoveries by Avto Metals Principal Scientist, Avto
Tavkhelidze.

In recent years, much research has been directed toward the development of quantum
transistors. Forms that have been proposed include the Aharanow-Bohm quantum phase
transistor, quantum well transistor, quantum-tunnelling transistor, and quantum
diffraction transistor.

The Avto transistor, instead, exploits the wave properties of electrons, which become
useful only when the dimensions of a structure reach nanoscales. New capabilities to
fabricate materials at nanoscales make possible many new technologies and products by
modifying the surface geometry of a material in such a way that the wave properties
of electrons become significant. The transistor disclosed in the new patent is one
such future technology.

The patent describes a quantum interference transistor that comprises a thin metal
film, an insulating layer above, and a smaller metal island on top. A potential
barrier created by quantum interference exists in the film when the external voltage
is zero. When a positive voltage is applied to the island, the barrier disappears and
the flow of current in the island is controlled, thus enabling the transistor-like
property of switching between open and closed states.

The net benefit of this new transistor is a more perfect "open" or "closed"
condition, resulting in lower leakage currents, lower noise, and lower power
consumption of devices built with these transistors. The technology can be employed
in most modern semiconductor manufacturing processes.

Avto Metals is developing and licencing a variety of technologies exploiting the
quantum interference effect, and expects to licence the quantum transistor technology
to an electronics manufacturer.

Avto Metals plc, based in Gibraltar, is a subsidiary of Borealis Exploration Limited
(US OTC: BOREF), a technology development holding company whose subsidiaries are
developing new technologies including the Chorus Motor, ideal for electric or hybrid
vehicles; the WheelTug aircraft electric drive system, which enables aircraft to taxi
without using jet engines; new technologies for efficiently producing electrical
power or cooling using quantum electron thermotunnelling; and photoelectric devices
to more efficiently convert solar energy into electricity.

(WO/2008/016344) THERMIONIC EMITTING METAL INTERCALATED GRAPHITIC NANOFIBERS

Publication Number: WO/2008/016344 International Application No.: PCT/US2006/029539
Publication Date: 07.02.2008 International Filing Date: 31.07.2006
Int. Class.: B32B 9/00 (2006.01), B32B 19/00 (2006.01)

Applicants: VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY [US/US]; 1207 17th Avenue South, Suite 105, Nashville, TN 37212

[0017] The present invention is predicated on the discovery that certain metal intercalated GCNF materials possess unexpectedly low work functions and

concomitant enhanced thermionic emission properties. Preferred intercalating metals are the alkali metals. Particularly preferred is potassium.

[0018] More particularly, it has unexpectedly1 found that the thermionic electron energy distributions (TEEDs) from GCNFs with and without potassium intercalation reveal a dramatic reduction in work function from 4.7 eV to 2.2 eV due to the intercalation. This reduction is generally consistent with prior photoemission experiments on fibrous carbon materials with intercalated alkali metals; however an important difference is that the present results were performed at elevated temperatures. These results indicate that the effect can be maintained at the high temperatures required in applications of these materials as thermionic electron sources and energy conversion materials.

Have owned Borealis shares for quite some time. The technologies sound great and it looks like with the deals in the works for Wheel Tug and Chorus Motor (not to mention Cool Chips and Power Chips) with Boeing and Rolls Royce that the company might finally bring some of its promise to fruition. Here's hoping!

HOT ELECTRONS FROM CATALYSIS

From:
http://pubs.acs.org/cen/nanofocus/top/83/8315energy.html

MITCH JACOBY
Imagine being able to tap the energy released during exothermic reactions on surfaces. Usually, this energy is channeled into the surface, resulting in a slight temperature rise. According to a new study, however, the reactions can be used to generate a steady flow of electricity.

For years, scientists have known that energy liberated in reactions occurring on solid surfaces can be transferred into the solid, thereby generating short-lived energetic electrons. Carrying more than 0.5 eV of kinetic energy, these so-called hot electrons can zip around the interior of a material--often traveling several nanometers before losing the excess energy to their surroundings.

Generally, hot electrons cool off within mere picoseconds. Despite the short timescale, a number of researchers in the past decade have succeeded in detecting hot electrons. In most cases, though, the energetic particles were detected as tiny transient signals.

Now, a research team has constructed a nanoscale device known as a Schottky diode and used it to measure a continuous flow of hot electrons generated by catalytic surface reactions. Specifically, the group--which includes chemistry professor Gabor A. Somorjai and postdoc Xiaozhong (Eric) Ji of the University of California, Berkeley, and Anthony Zuppero and Jawahar M. Gidwani of San Francisco-based NeoKismet--measured a continuous current of 40 µamp produced via oxidation of carbon monoxide on a platinum electrode for more than half an hour (Nano Lett. 2005, 5, 753).

DOUBLE-DUTY DIODE
A novel diode design that features a 5-nm-thick platinum film, a thin layer of TiO2, and various other electrodes (yellow) and films mediates catalytic reactions and simultaneously enables a resulting flow of energetic electrons to be measured.

The essential features of the diode include a 150-nm-thick layer of TiO2 that supports a 5-nm-thick platinum film that serves as a catalyst and an electron source. As CO is converted to CO2, the exothermic reaction generates hot electrons at the Pt surface. If the Pt film is no more than a few nanometers thick, the electrons can migrate through the metal to the semiconductor (TiO2) interface and retain their high energy. Electrons with sufficient energy can cross the potential barrier into the semiconductor and be measured as a diode current. The team reports that, under the conditions used in the demonstration, for every four molecules of CO2 produced, they collected three electrons.

Using Pt/GaN nanodiodes in a related study, Somorjai and coworkers showed that the Pt films must be of high quality and less than 10 nm thick to collect hot electrons efficiently (J. Am. Chem. Soc., published online March 31 at dx.doi.org/10.1021/ja050945m).

Francisco Zaera, a chemistry professor at UC Riverside, remarks that "the study could open new avenues for generating electrical signals directly from catalytic processes and can be used, for example, to design new types of chemical sensors." The observations also raise interesting questions regarding the role of hot electrons in catalytic reactions, he adds.

Somorjai agrees emphatically. "In light of the large currents of hot electrons measured in the study, we need to revisit the influence of electron transport on surface bonding and catalytic activity at metal and metal oxide surfaces," he says.

And given the similarities between the catalytic nanodiodes and nanosized metal-on-metal-oxide catalysts, the tiny devices are poised to serve as new model systems.
