PARIS business unit, today announced that it is showcasing its PNC(TM) (Provider Network Controller), the industry's only dynamic control plane for Carrier Ethernet at the MPLS and Ethernet World Congress in Paris, France, February 6th through 8th.

Soapstone Networks PNC is an external control plane designed to automate the entire service lifecycle by providing state-of-the-art provisioning, network fault to service correlation, performance, optimization, and planning. The PNC provides a comprehensive common control framework for various technologies including Carrier Ethernet that decouples services from the underlying transport network to deliver maximum flexibility to customer networks.

Soapstone Networks will demonstrate its PNC software, provisioning services across a multi-vendor network comprised of Nortel, Extreme Networks and BATM Systems PBT switches. In addition to its dynamic provisioning software, Soapstone is also unveiling its new bridge and roll functionality, which makes it possible for customers to introduce new hardware or services seamlessly into an existing network or perform routine maintenance in an automated fashion. Its bridge and roll feature enables customers to request the removal of nodes from active service without disruption to services. When a node is taken out of service by the customer, the PNC notifies all of the affected services. For each service that is impacted, the PNC re-computes new trunks and maps the service through the available network. When the customer is ready to declare a switch active again, the node can be enabled, the PNC detects the new switch in the network and re-computes all the existing tunnels. The Committed Information Rate (CIR) of each service is used in the path selection and no oversubscription occurs.

"We are very pleased to unveil our latest offering of the PNC to help accelerate the adoption of Carrier Ethernet technology," said Esmeralda Swartz, SVP Marketing and Business Development at Soapstone Networks. "Soapstone's external control plane delivers a much needed control framework for deploying E-Line, E-LAN, and E-Tree services across PBT. When combined with data plane solutions from industry partners, customers can deploy point-to-point and multipoint-to-multipoint PBT solutions today while preserving PBT's simplicity."
