Coal sales by Coal & Allied Industries Ltd. (CNA.AU) totaled 9.88 million metric tons over the first six months of 2011, a 17% increase over the same period of the previous year, the Rio Tinto Ltd. (RIO)-controlled miner said Wednesday.

Coal & Allied, one of the biggest miners in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales state--the world's largest thermal coal export basin--said total production from its mines, including minority partners, rose 10% to 13.2 million tons.

But total production of semi-soft coking coal, a higher-grade variant that can be used in both power stations and steelmaking blast furnaces, slipped 16% to 2.2 million tons, despite soaring prices caused by flooding in neighboring Queensland state.

The company said it remains on target to achieve full-year saleable coal production 5%-10% above 2010's level, when Coal & Allied's share came to 18.8 million tons.
