Volkswagen of America, the U.S. subsidiary of Germany's Volkswagen AG (VOW.XE) Thursday said it sold 25,232 vehicles in August - an increase of 10.4% compared to the same period last year.

MAIN FACTS:

-Year-to-date U.S. car sales increased 21%.

-Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen of America, Inc said "August saw its share of challenges, with consumer confidence sliding and a substantial hurricane on the last weekend of the month, to name just two".

-Nonetheless, Volkswagen continued to show strength in its base demand, with the seventh straight month of double-digit growth, and continued strong performance across the lineup, he added.

-U.S sales for Jetta Sedan increased 55.5% in August.
