Valero Energy says Tropical Storm Harold caused some operational disruptions at its oil refinery in Corpus Christi, Texas that led to above-normal emissions.

"During a severe rain event associated with Tropical Storm Harold, an unanticipated loss of containment occurred at oily water sump 70-V-06, resulting in air emissions exceeding reportable quantities," the refinery said in a statement to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, noting the emissions began Tuesday and ended Wednesday, lasting about 26 hours.

A sump is a low space that collects often undesirable liquids such as water or chemicals.

"The material was recovered using vacuum trucks and any contaminated soil will be collected and managed at a permitted facility," the refinery added.

Valero's 293,000-barrel-a-day Corpus Christi refinery is made up of eastern and western plants that are located within miles of each other and handle different types of crude oil. This incident happened at the West Plant.
