I am told by our investment advisor, as well as our CPA that you can even be hit with a tax obligation if you hold ET in an IRA. That is where we hold all of our ET holdings.

While the following is true "You will have to recapture all the depreciation and capital gains" except 0% Rate: Single filers with taxable income up to $48,350; Married filing jointly up to $96,700; Married filing separately up to $48,3503. This means for example if one is married and over 65 personal exemption
32,000+96,700.= 128,700 income before one hits the first bracket If single over 65 17,000+48350=65,300 before one hits the first bracket. And this is taxable income (after any depreciation or credits) Of course this would be on long term Cap Gains. I found that it would actually be beneficial for me to sell and reclaim my depreciation and take my Cap gains this year. I then bought back in. This re-starts the clock, depreciation and cap gains. People worry too much about Cap Gains.
On long term gains they are not that a big deal unless you are a high income earner. They can make more of ones Social security retirement taxable though.

Yes, I agree. I bought back in yesterday. For tax reasons as well as the recent run up I sold to go ahead and recapture Depreciation and claim cap gains this year. Fresh start for 2026.

Make sure you run it by your accountant before selling at a profit. I believe You will have to recapture all the depreciation and capital gains that took place during your ownership. You may get beat up on taxes pretty good.  Hold for life and enjoy the dividends. 

and yet...increased dollar amount buys less shares...but share value appreciation to boot. it's an awful dilemma.
sell now for the appreciation or let it ride for the dividend. what to do? what to do? i will admit that after this run up it is very tempting to
take some profits, yet my greed tells me there may be more appreciation and dividends continue to amass. no lie, i am at a quandary.
but what a fine mess we are in.

All great going forward with ET here wshaw. Appreciate your comment on the distribution but we all know when the price rockets up like ET's has, the percentage yield on the distribution also drops rapidly. Still a great return on the distribution.

I would no be surprised to see a larger increase in the distribution for next Q. ET is no longer the standout distribution payer that it once was and now has someone nipping at their heels. JMHO

Nice 3.2% increase in this next quarterly distribution to .3250, announced late yesterday. Just like the "gift that keeps on giving," ET is the "Gem that just keeps on paying out larger and larger quarterly cash unit distributions."

ET can be considered an AI stock in a way. Huge data centers need fuel to operate.  ET will power many of these new centers. 

Hard to say, but the midstream players in the energy sector, e.g. pipelines, all appear to be getting hit like this today. It has been quite a run here and in KMI of late.

Why the huge sell off today??

I do not believe it has been announced yet. Most likely February 7 or 8 as the last one was November 8.

Yes, ET has done quite nicely, in the last year. I am expecting an even better year in 2025.

Nice to have ET back above $20, and KMI back above $30, where they belong.

Our Gem here is bumping up against its 52-week high, and even at this share price the distribution is 6.5%. New 5-year high for KMI today also.

you get a K-1 instead of a 1099. The distribution is not actually a dividend. Some of it is treated as profit and most of it is return of capital. Some folks think it complicates the tax return, but to me it is very simple. You just enter the numbers from the respective boxes on the tax return just as you would on a 1099. I have held ET for years and dont find it a problem. Some brokerage houses even have it so the form can be imported right into your tax return.
