Telecomunicacoes de Sao Paulo (TLPP4.BR), or Telesp, had a first-quarter net profit of 403 million Brazilian reals ($227 million), down 16.6% from a year earlier, it said late Wednesday.

Telesp, which is controlled by Spain's Telefonica S.A. (TEF), attributed the drop in its net profit to a decline in local service revenue.

In the first quarter, Telesp reported net revenue of BRL3.89 billion, down from BRL3.96 billion a year earlier.

The company's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or Ebitda, fell 13.9% to BRL1.27 billion. The company posted an Ebitda margin, considered a key indicator of profitability, of 32.8%, down from 37.4%.

Telesp invested a total BRL357.4 million in its operations in the period, down from BRL405.3 million a year earlier.
