Asset manager Legg Mason Inc. (LM) and glass-container maker Owens-Illinois Inc. (OI) will leave the S&P 500 index after the close of trading Thursday, as S&P Dow Jones Indices said the companies have market values more representative of the mid-cap space.

The S&P 500 will add real-estate investment trust Mid-America Apartment Communities Inc. (MAA) and AmSurg Corp. (AMSG), which provides outsourced physician services and operates surgery facilities.

Legg Mason has a market value of about $3.18 billion, while Owens-Illinois has a market capitalization of about $2.48 billion.

Meanwhile, pizza company Papa's John International Inc. (PZZA) will join the S&P MidCap 400, with its spot in the S&P SmallCap 600 slated for Wingstop Inc. (WING).
