Its largest unit, Corrugated Packaging, makes cartons and boxes, as well as linerboard and bulk containers. The company's Building products division produces lumber, particleboard, gypsum wallboard, and other materials and manages nearly 2 million acres of timberland. The company sold its Temple-Inland Financial Services segment that included 153 Guaranty Federal Bank branches in Texas (100) and California (53), and its Forestar Real Estate division which invested in and developed properties.

Analysts say recovering wood prices and production cuts will help pulp and paper stocks

NEW YORK (AP) -- Analysts said Monday that cost cuts and higher prices for wood products should lead to better results for companies that make pulp and paper products.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Paul Quinn said Mercer International Inc., Domtar Corp. and AbitibiBowater Inc. will be able to raise prices after reducing production capacity, which helped balance their supply with decreasing demand. He started coverage of Domtar and AbitibiBowater at "Outperform."

AbitibiBowater also will benefit from higher prices for newsprint and groundwood paper, he wrote. He rated Domtar stock at "Sector Perform" because he believes the company will have to cut capacity more to keep supply and demand balanced.

Lehman Brothers analyst Peter Ruschmeier said wood product prices are improving after reaching long-term lows in the first quarter. He said Weyerhaeuser Co., AbitibiBowater and Temple-Inland Inc. could report larger profits as a result.

He said prices for lumber, oriented strandboard and plywood are higher than he expected, although he thinks the prices of lumber and plywood are beginning to ease back from their recent gains.

PE is 1.08. Still a bargain at these prices.

Icahn in investment deal with Guaranty Financial

Billionaire Carl Icahn agrees to buy $55M in Guaranty Financial shares, $175M in notes

NEW YORK (AP) -- Billionaire investor Carl Icahn has reached an investment agreement with Guaranty Financial Group Inc., according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Thursday.

On June 7, Icahn agreed to buy 1.1 million shares of Guaranty Financial's preferred shares for about $55 million. He also agreed to buy $175 million in units of subordinated notes and 406,000 shares of series B preferred stock.

In connection with the deal, Icahn will work with the company's board to nominate a representative to the board. Icahn also agreed not to seek additional board seats or attempt to gain control of the company.

Icahn reported holding roughly 3.5 million Guaranty Financial shares, representing a 7.7 percent stake in the Austin, Texas-based company.

Guaranty Financial spun off from packaging and building materials maker Temple-Inland Inc. at the end of last year.

Guaranty Financial shares lost 6 cents to close at $5.29 on Thursday.
