AmSouth Bank (NYSE:ASO) has obtained $1 million in grants for four organizations that provide affordable housing in the Southeast. The money will be awarded through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta's Affordable Housing Program, a competitive program that provides funding assistance for single- or multi-family housing. The funds, coupled with bank financing and other resources, will help the organizations build or renovate 194 units of affordable housing. The following organizations, whose applications were all underwritten by AmSouth, will receive grants: HERO, Hale County Housing Resource Center - A $160,000 grant to construct Cauldwell Creek, a subdivision of 32 lease-to-purchase single-family homes for very low-income families in Greensboro, Ala. Cauldwell Creek is the first phase of a rural planned community that will consist of various housing types affordable to low- and very low-income residents of Hale County. Bennett and Company - A $160,000 grant to construct Country Club Cottages, a 32-unit rental apartment complex for very low-income elderly residents in Thomasville, Ala. The $3.5 million development will include 20 two-bedroom units and 12 one-bedroom units. Metro City Redevelopment Coalition, Inc. - A $250,000 grant to offset development costs associated with the construction and rehabilitation of Melrose PepperMill Apartments II in Baton Rouge, La. The 30-unit rental complex is a Special Needs community, with all units set aside for residents with special needs, homeless individuals, and families with disabilities. The project also features recreational facilities, an office, and conference facility. Woodbine Community Organization - A $500,000 grant that will be used to build Victory Village, a 100-unit multifamily rental project for low- and very low-income households in Nashville, Tenn. Victory Village will incorporate family rental housing, affordable and market rate for-sale housing, and assisted living housing on a 27 acre site in north Nashville. The 100 rental units are the first phase of a multiphase project. The proposed rental units will be targeted toward families composed of children who are not able to be raised by their parents, and are being cared for by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and extended family members. Organizations seeking these grants must be underwritten by a member bank, such as AmSouth. According to the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta, since 1990, housing organizations have used the AHP grants to help develop more than 52,000 housing units for very low- to moderate-income families and to provide down-payment assistance to nearly 5,200 families.
