Jazz Pharmaceuticals and AbCellera Partner on Antibody Programs for Solid TumorsJune 17, 2026 8:50 AM
IH Market News Jazz Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:JAZZ) and AbCellera (NASDAQ:ABCL) have signed a preclinical collaboration, option and licensing agreement focused on the discovery and development of T-cell engaging multispecific antibodies for gastrointestinal cancers and other solid tumors. The partnership combines AbCellera’s antibody discovery capabilities with Jazz’s oncology development expertise as the companies seek to advance new cancer therapies. Initial Collaboration Covers Three Potential Programs As part of the agreement, AbCellera will lead discovery and early research activities for two initial development programs. The deal also includes a commitment to launch a third program within the next 12 months. Jazz will retain an exclusive worldwide option to further develop and commercialize any therapies that emerge from the collaboration. Upfront Payments Could Exceed $80 Million AbCellera will receive $56 million in upfront consideration tied to the first two programs. A further $28 million payment will become payable once the third research programme is initiated, bringing the potential upfront value of the initial collaboration to $84 million. The agreement provides immediate funding for research activities while creating the opportunity for substantially larger future payments. Milestones and Royalties Offer Significant Upside Should Jazz choose to exercise its development option, AbCellera would become eligible for up to $792 million per program in option fees and milestone payments. These payments are linked to progress across clinical development, regulatory approvals and commercial sales performance. In addition, AbCellera would be entitled to receive tiered royalties on future net sales, ranging from mid-single-digit percentages to low double-digit rates. Scope of Partnership Could Expand The collaboration also provides flexibility for future expansion. Both companies may agree to add as many as two additional research programs beyond the initial projects. AbCellera could also support later-stage activities, including investigational new drug-enabling studies and the manufacturing of clinical trial materials. Companies Highlight Strategic Fit Jazz said the agreement supports its broader strategy of expanding its oncology pipeline, particularly in gastrointestinal cancers. Chief Scientific Officer for Oncology Josh Allen noted that the partnership complements the company’s existing expertise in cancer treatment development. AbCellera founder and Chief Executive Officer Carl Hansen said the collaboration will utilize the company’s T-cell engager platform, including proprietary CD3-binding antibodies, multispecific protein engineering technologies and high-throughput functional screening capabilities. The companies believe the combination of these technologies could accelerate the development of novel therapies for patients with difficult-to-treat solid tumors. Definition of Business Metrics

We regularly review the following business metrics to evaluate our business, measure our performance, identify trends affecting our business, formulate financial projections, and make strategic decisions. We believe that the following metrics are important to understand our current business. These metrics may change or may be substituted for additional or different metrics as our business develops.

Partner-initiated program starts with downstreams represent the number of unique partner-initiated programs where we stand to participate financially in downstream success for which we have commenced the discovery effort. The discovery effort commences on the later of (i) the day on which we receive sufficient reagents to start discovery of antibodies against a target and (ii) the day on which the kick-off meeting for the program is held. We view this metric as an indication of the selection and initiation of projects by our partners and the resulting potential for near-term payments. Cumulatively, partner-initiated program starts with downstream participation indicate our total opportunities to earn downstream revenue from milestone fees and royalties (or royalty equivalents) in the mid- to long-term.

Molecules in the clinic represent the count of unique molecules for which an Investigational New Drug, or IND, New Animal Drug, or equivalent under other regulatory regimes, application has reached "open" status or has otherwise been approved based on an antibody that was discovered either by us or by a partner using licensed AbCellera technology. Where the date of such application approval is not known to us, the date of the first public announcement of a clinical trial will be used for the purpose of this metric. We view this metric as an indication of our near- and mid-term potential revenue from milestone fees and potential royalty payments in the long term.

AbCellera anticipates starting Phase 1 clinical trial Q3-2025

VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AbCellera (Nasdaq: ABCL) today announced it has received a No Objection Letter (NOL) from Health Canada authorizing its Clinical Trial Application (CTA) for ABCL635, an investigational antibody antagonist targeting neurokinin 3 receptor (NK3R) that is being developed for the non-hormonal treatment of moderate-to-severe vasomotor symptoms (VMS), commonly known as hot flashes, associated with menopause.

“Vasomotor symptoms of menopause affect millions of women, with significant impacts on their well-being, and their personal and professional lives,” said Natalya Nazarenko, MD, Executive Medical Director at AbCellera. “We are excited to advance ABCL635 into a Phase 1 trial and explore it as a potential non-hormonal, long-acting treatment option to address these highly disruptive symptoms.”

The Phase 1 study is anticipated to begin in Q3 of 2025 and will evaluate ABCL635's safety, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics in healthy participants and postmenopausal women with moderate-to-severe VMS.

Using AI to find the next blockbuster drug
This week, AI chipmaker Nvidia placed their bet — investing $50M into AI drug discovery platform Recursion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:RXRX) — sending its stock up 78%.
Drugmakers are already benefiting from using AI to discover new drugs. And in the process, AI is speeding up and reducing the cost of the long and expensive drug development process.
Between 2015 and 2022, the cumulative investment in AI drug development has risen from under $1B to $24.6B.
In the next decade, Morgan Stanley expects AI will help develop an additional 50 drugs with an extra $50B in sales.
Following Nvidia’s investment, other AI drug discovery platforms rose on the news, including Exscientia (NASDAQ:EXAI), AbCellera Biologics (NASDAQ:ABCL) and Relay Therapeutics (NASDAQ:RLAY).
Recursion has five drugs, and Exscientia has three drugs discovered with AI, which are already in human trials. And within the startup sector, AI drug discovery has quickly become one of the hottest markets for investment.

AbCellera (NASDAQ:ABCL) today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has expanded the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for bamlanivimab (LY-CoV555) 700 mg administered with etesevimab (LY-CoV016) 1400 mg to include post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection or symptomatic COVID-19. The neutralizing antibodies, which were authorized together by the FDA in February 2021 to treat early COVID-19 infection, can now also be used together to treat high-risk individuals 12 years of age and older who have not been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or are not expected to mount an adequate immune response to complete vaccination, and have been exposed to someone infected with SARS-CoV-2 or who are at high risk of exposure in an institutional setting, including a nursing home or prison.

"The expanded use authorization for bamlanivimab together with etesevimab provides a way to protect the significant number of people who, because of their situational exposure risk or medical condition, remain vulnerable to COVID-19," said Carl Hansen, Ph.D., CEO and President of AbCellera. "More than 535,000 patients have been treated with bamlanivimab alone or together with etesevimab, potentially keeping more than 25,000 patients out of the hospital and saving more than 10,000 lives. With this expanded authorization, these antibodies, which have been shown to be effective against the highly contagious Delta variant, can now be used to protect some of the most at-risk people exposed to the virus."

The expanded EUA is based on data from the Phase 3 BLAZE-2 trial that showed bamlanivimab prevented COVID-19 in nursing homes, reducing the risk of contracting the disease by up to 80 percent in nursing home residents and up to 57 percent among residents and staff of long-term care facilities. Eli Lilly and Company's (Lilly) study was conducted in partnership with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN).

Pseudovirus and authentic virus studies demonstrate that bamlanivimab and etesevimab together retain neutralization activity against the Alpha and Delta variants. On September 2nd, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), alongside the FDA, resumed the shipment and distribution of bamlanivimab and etesevimab administered together.

For information about the use of bamlanivimab and etesevimab together for the treatment and prevention of mild to moderate COVID-19 in high-risk patients under the FDA's emergency use authorization, please click here or contact Lilly's 24-hour support line at 1-855-LillyC19 (1-855-545-5921).

About AbCellera's Response to COVID-19

AbCellera initially mobilized its pandemic response platform against COVID-19 in March of 2020, resulting in the discovery of bamlanivimab, the first monoclonal antibody therapy for COVID-19 to reach human testing and to be authorized for emergency use by the FDA. Bamlanivimab alone and together with other antibodies has treated hundreds of thousands of patients, preventing COVID-19-related hospitalizations and death.

AbCellera's ongoing efforts to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic have identified thousands of unique anti-SARS-CoV-2 human antibodies. These include bamlanivimab, bebtelovimab, and other antibodies that are in various stages of testing by AbCellera and its partners.

AbCellera's pandemic response capabilities were developed over the past three years as part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Pandemic Prevention Platform (P3) program. The goal of the P3 program is to establish a robust technology platform for pandemic response capable of developing field-ready medical countermeasures within 60 days of isolation of an unknown viral pathogen.
