Migration From ATM to Ethernet Brings New Services to Small-Town
Indiana SANTA CLARA, Calif. and MURRAY HILL, N.J., Oct. 3
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Riverstone Networks (RSTN.PK) and Lucent
Technologies (NYSE:LU) today announced that Enhanced
Telecommunications Corporation (ETC), an Indiana-based Independent
Operating Company (IOC), has selected the two companies to enhance
its network to enable new Ethernet and IP-based services, including
IPTV and VoIP, to residential and business customers. The
equipment, provided by Lucent as a Riverstone global reseller, will
enable ETC to offer new services to subscribers in four Indiana
counties, further enhancing ETC's portfolio. ETC, which currently
features both wireline and wireless voice services, DSL Internet
access, security systems and web-based management systems, will
deploy RS 8000 Ethernet aggregation routers from Riverstone to
migrate its ATM infrastructure to Ethernet. This migration will not
only give ETC the bandwidth and multiservice support necessary to
expand its service offerings, but will also allow it to reduce
operational expenses by converging its multiple networks onto a
common Ethernet infrastructure, serving both residential and
business services. The combination of ETC's progressive services
and a highly efficient network, in turn, will help the small
carrier remain competitive. "After a thorough and comprehensive lab
trial of multiple Ethernet solutions, Riverstone proved to be the
best choice," said Chad Dieselberg, Engineering Manager for ETC.
"The RS 8000 provides not only an economical and efficient service
delivery platform, but a highly reliable and scalable one too.
That's important because our customers, residential and business
alike, demand value for their dollars and that means our network
has to be able to support high-quality, next-generation services at
a reasonable price." "This contract highlights the benefits Lucent
and Riverstone are delivering to operators," said Inbar
Lasser-Raab, Vice President, Marketing, Riverstone Networks.
"Riverstone and Lucent are committed to working together to meet
our customers' needs as they evolve their networks to support
Ethernet capabilities." Riverstone's RS family of MPLS-based
Ethernet routers provides a common carrier-grade feature set over a
range of platforms, both small and large. As a result, smaller
carriers can enjoy true carrier-grade reliability and Quality of
Service (QoS) without having to super-size their networks. In March
2005, Riverstone received a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural
Utilities Service (RUS) listing for both its RS and Riverstone
15000 product lines. Designed to increase the rate of broadband
deployments in smaller communities, a RUS listing permits IOCs and
Rural Local Exchange Carriers (RLECs) to deploy these products
using RUS Broadband Loan and Grant programs. Recently, Riverstone
became one of the first equipment vendors to receive carrier
Ethernet compliance certification from the Metro Ethernet Forum
(MEF). Riverstone Networks, Inc. is a leading provider of carrier
Ethernet infrastructure solutions for business and residential
communications services. Riverstone's Ethernet router portfolio
uniquely delivers the reliability that allows carriers to meet the
triple play -- voice, video and data -- service requirements of
their customers in a cost-effective and scalable way. Riverstone
allows carriers to offer new services over existing
revenue-generating networks permitting them to evolve to a next
generation Ethernet infrastructure. Lucent Technologies designs and
delivers the systems, services and software that drive
next-generation communications networks. Backed by Bell Labs
research and development, Lucent uses its strengths in mobility,
optical, software, data and voice networking technologies, as well
as services, to create new revenue-generating opportunities for its
customers, while enabling them to quickly deploy and better manage
their networks. Lucent's customer base includes communications
service providers, governments and enterprises worldwide. For more
