                         Statement re Press Speculation

Elitel Telecom S.p.A., the independent Italian telecommunications group, notes
the recent comments regarding the possibility of an offer for the Company by
Tiscali S.p.A., the Italian listed telecom operator. Elitel confirms that it has
not received any such proposal in relation to an offer for the Company.

The Board of Elitel notes that deregulation and restructuring of the Italian
telecom sector continues and, as already announced, Elitel has acquired three
companies in the current financial year and has undertaken a number of further
strategic investments and joint ventures. Elitel's Board will continue to
explore all opportunities that may present themselves to maximize value for the
Company and its shareholders.
