ENGELHARD ANNOUNCES CONFERENCE CALL 
WEBCAST DETAILS ON FOURTH QUARTER AND 
YEAR-END 2002 EARNINGS

ISELIN, NJ, January 16, 2003 - Engelhard Corporation (NYSE:EC) will release its
fourth quarter and year-end results on Tuesday morning, February 4, 2003 before
the market opens. The earnings release will be available on our website
www.engelhard.com under Investor Relations/Financial Releases.

The company will host a teleconference at 2:00 p.m. (ET) on February 4. This
conference call will be audio webcast live at www.engelhard.com under Investor
