FRANKFURT--German new car registrations rose in October, the Federal Motor Transport Authority said Monday, after a two-year decline in sales.

Registrations, a proxy for sales, increased 2.3% on the year to 265,441.

October's new car registrations were stronger than in previous months as they declined 5.2% year-to-date.

BMW AG's (BMW.XE) namesake brand, General Motors' (GM) Opel brand and Volkswagen AG's (VOW.XE) Skoda unit all fared well with increases of 3.1%, 12% and 37%. Some Japanese brands also did well with Toyota's' registrations rising almost 16% and those of Mazda by 56%.

However, new registrations by PSA Peugeot Citroen (UG.FR) declined, with a 21% slump at the Peugeot brand and 15% at Citroen.
