A top U.S. cyber-security official resigned on Friday, prompting a change in leadership amid a string of Internet-based attacks on numerous government and corporate computer networks.

Randy Vickers stepped down as director of the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, a security group that operates under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security.

Roberta Stempfley, who is the acting deputy assistant secretary for national cyber security, notified the agency's staff of Vickers' departure by email. She said Deputy Director Lee Rock will fill in as acting director until a replacement is found.

"We are confident that our organization will continue its strong performance under his leadership," Stempfley said in the email.

Efforts to reach Vickers weren't successful.

The shuffling of security leadership comes amid prominent attacks on government and corporate networks by Internet vigilante group Anonymous and hacking collective Lulz Security. The groups have claimed attacks on Sony Corp. (SNE, 6758.TO), Nintendo Co. (NTDOY, 7974.OK), the U.S. Senate, the Central Intelligence Agency and the Arizona Department of Public Safety. The groups have also posted personal details of government officials, as well as thousands of email addresses and passwords for uninvolved computer users.
