Mining Company Inc. CNG-TSX.V received a request from Hiroyuki
Kunitake, Trade Commissioner, Investment, Energy and Resources in
the Embassy of Canada in Tokyo, Japan requesting samples of
Clinoptilolite Zeolite from the Canadian Mining Company's zeolite
deposits near Princeton, BC. The request was initiated from
inquiries by Japanese companies showing interest in importing
zeolite from Canada for use in the decontamination of soils in the
regions affected by the tragic events triggered by the March 11,
2011 earthquake that severely damaged the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear
Power Plant. Recently TEPCO the operator of the Fukushima
Daiichi Plant in Japan immersed quantities of Clinoptilolite
Zeolite into the ocean near the outflow of the damaged power plant
to adsorb cesium-137 from entering the Pacific Ocean. Seven
thousand hectares of contaminated farmland in Fukushima prefecture
represents an immediate and on-going need for thousands of tonnes
of Clinoptilolite Zeolite to decontaminate the top soils of cesium
-137 to a depth of 30 cm. Fukushima's farming sector
represents a 2.4 billion dollar a year industry in the local
economy. Thousands of family farms have been devastated by
the soil contamination and getting them up and producing again is
an urgent priority of the Japanese Federal Government. The
Associated Press has estimated that over 128,000 hectares of
farmland has been affected by the radioactive fallout representing
an estimated need of 500,000 tonnes of Clinoptilolite Zeolite
urgently required for soil decontamination throughout Japan.
Clinoptilolite Zeolite as found on the Canadian Mining Company's
zeolite deposits has been used to clean up after many major
radioactive disasters around the world including the Three Mile
Island meltdown in Pennsylvania in 1979 and Chernobyl in 1986 where
over 500,000 tonnes of Clinoptilolite Zeolite was dropped by
helicopter on the plant site in the Ukraine as well as being
introduced into the feed of dairy cows in the region to remove
cesium-137 from the milk they produced. Canadian Mining Company
Inc. will endeavour to expedite the requested sample to Tokyo and
is greatly honoured to be considered as a supplier of
Clinoptilolite Zeolite needed for this noble humanitarian effort.
