The European Commission Friday cleared pharmaceuticals company Merck & Co. (MRK) to buy Schering-Plough Corp. (SGP).

Merck is paying $41.1 billion in cash and stock for Schering.

To avoid antitrust problems, Merck has sold its 50% stake in animal-health company Merial Limited to Sanofi-Aventis SA (SNY), its partner in the joint venture.
