Freescale Semiconductor Japan Ltd. (1-8-1, Shimomeguro, Meguro-ku,
Tokyo, President: Tsuneo Takahashi) (NYSE:FSL)(NYSE:FSL.B), today
announced that Freescale's i.MX21 applications processor is
integrated into the new IP videophone NR-IPKTV developed by Iwatsu
Electric Co.,Ltd. (1-7-41, Kugayama, Suginami-ku, Tokyo, President:
Yoshiyuki Ishibashi). The NR-IPKTV is a versatile phone designed
for business use, integrating a camera and a high-resolution color
LCD which allows for touch-panel operation. Freescale's i.MX21
multimedia applications processor enables the NR-IPKTV's video
conference (extension) and web browsing function. The NR-IPKTV
addresses the demand for visual functionalities along with
popularization of the IP network, and is designed as a
next-generation phone which can simultaneously process voice,
image, video, and web browsing using the IP protocol. For more
details about Iwatsu's NR-IPKTV, visit the web site:

Freescale's i.MX family of application processors is ideal for the
emerging VoIP devices, wireless IP phones and WiFi phones all based
upon the Internet, as well as various multimedia devices. The
i.MX21 processor provides a host of multimedia functions, including
H.263 and MPEG-4 video and JPEG image processing, mirroring,
scaling, and rotation, to encode and decode video and audio. These
functions enable high-quality voice, image, and video processing.
In addition, high performance of the i.MX21 processor allows
multiple applications to run simultaneously. In addition, the high
performance of the i.MX21 processor allows multiple applications to
run simultaneously and eliminates the need for a DSP for processing
VoIP functions like G.711 and echo canceller, reducing substrate
size and total cost. "We are very pleased that the i.MX's video
compression/expansion function plays an important role in Iwatsu's
IP videophone NR-IPKTV to support video playback, said Berardino
Baratta, general manager of the multimedia applications division at
Freescale. The i.MX family is designed for portable media
applications and is engineered to help save power of the end
products. Freescale is strengthening the i.MX roadmap and believes
that these applications processors will contribute to the future
deployment of Iwatsu's IP videophone products." Communication
infrastructure is entering the era of IP. The IP phones for
business use are required to have, in addition to conventional
voice communication, advanced communication functions leveraging
the benefits of the IP network. In particular, demands for visual
functionalities which allow transferring videos, communicating by
watching each other's faces, or watching videos from networked
monitor cameras are increasing. Freescale's i.MX21 is a high-speed,
versatile, and low-power multimedia applications processor which
integrates the MPEG-4 video codec, LCD controller, and terminal
interfaces, as well as switching bus connecting the on-chip
components, and enables the advanced multimedia and communication
functions required for high-performance terminal devices.
Freescales i.MX21 Multimedia Applications Processor The i.MX21
multimedia applications processor is a member of the widely used
i.MX family and is ideal for computationally-intensive applications
such as video and audio media players, smart personal
communicators, IP videophones and GPS systems as well as a host of
other wireless mobile devices. i.MX processors feature an extensive
suite of software support packages based on Microsoft Windows CE
and PocketPC, Symbian OS, Linux OS and many leading RTOSes,
plus, reference designs to greatly accelerate the creation of
next-generation mobile communication products. About Freescale
