Mexico's Rates For Calls To Mobile Phones To Drop

Calls from fixed lines to cellphones in Mexico will drop nearly
11% starting Jan. 1 as a result of agreements between operators,
the country's biggest fixed-line company said Friday.
Telefonos de Mexico (TMX, TELMEX.MX) said in a press release
that the cost per minute for calls from its fixed lines to mobile
phones will be 1.35 pesos (11 cents) under the "calling party pays"
system.
Telmex, which controls more than 80% of Mexico's fixed phone
lines, is 60% owned by America Movil (AMX, AMX.MX), Latin America's
largest mobile company and Mexico's biggest wireless service
provider. The country's second-largest mobile provider is Spain's
Telefonica (TEF).
Telmex said that under the agreements, the cost per minute will
continue to fall in subsequent years to reach MXN1.00 in 2014.
By then, Mexico will have cut rates under the calling party pays
system by 80% in real terms in over a decade, Telmex said.
The introduction of calling party pays led to exponential growth
in prepaid mobile phone use in Mexico, which has dwarfed the growth
in fixed-line telephony.
