DOTHAN, Ala., March 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Movie Gallery,
Inc., (NASDAQ:MOVI) the nation's second largest video retailer,
today announced that its fourth annual "Be A Star" fundraiser has
officially begun. Donations made through this campaign support the
Helen Keller Foundation's global efforts to end blindness and
deafness through medical research. "The Helen Keller Foundation is
a worthy cause that makes a real difference in people's lives
throughout the United States, Canada and the rest of the world,"
said Joe T. Malugen, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Movie
Gallery. "We are proud to be part of this important effort." From
now until April 8, customers can make donations to the Helen Keller
Foundation at all Movie Gallery stores in the U.S. and Canada.
Movie Gallery Associates will award "stars" similar to the stars on
the "Hollywood Walk of Fame" to participating customers. These
stars can be taken home or posted throughout Movie Gallery's
stores. Movie Gallery has collected over $2 million for the
Foundation over the past 3 years. "Funds donated by Movie Gallery
customers have already helped discover new and effective treatments
for eye injury, retinal detachment, diabetic eye disease, strokes
of the eye, and aging diseases of the macula. We are grateful to
the millions of Movie Gallery customers who have already donated,
and to the company for placing our cause before them," said Dr.
Robert Morris, President of the Helen Keller Foundation for
Research and Education. "One of our most recent cases was a
10-year-old girl, Heather Miller, whose retina was reattached and
her sight returned from technology made possible by the research
programs of the Foundation. With the continuing support of Movie
Gallery and its customers, we look forward to announcing more
success stories and making even greater progress in our efforts to
advance the state of vision and hearing research worldwide," said
Ryan Roenigk, Associate Director of Development for the Helen
Keller Foundation. "Heather's story just shows how important the
Helen Keller Foundation's research is and how important it is that
we, and our customers, continue to support it," Malugen added. For
