By and large, the cutting-edge crowd at the South by Southwest® (SXSW) Interactive Festival in 2012 supports nonprofits and charities. More than 87 percent of the participants surveyed by Convio (NASDAQ: CNVO) say they do give to nonprofit organizations, with more than 45 percent indicating they support multiple causes. Not surprisingly, more than 50 percent say they donate online; however, in person donations also ranked high. Human & social services came out on top in terms of the types of causes attendees support, followed by disaster relief, children and faith-based.

“Online fundraising continues to shine, especially with the Generation X and Generation Y crowd at SXSW Interactive,” said Karoline McLaughlin, director of corporate communications at Convio. “Our survey results demonstrate a consistent theme that those passionate about technology and committed to innovation are compelled to give back to their communities and the world at large, with online clearly the preferred way to do so.”

Key Findings from the Survey

  • SXSW Attendees Support Charities: More than 87 percent of attendees donate to charities throughout the year. The primary reason for not donating is a lack of money. More than 45 percent of attendees support multiple causes.
  • Human & Social Services Receive Highest Financial Support: Of those surveyed, 27 percent support human & social services organizations; 15 percent support children-related charities; 16 percent support disaster & international relief; and 12 percent support church/faith-based organizations.
  • Donations Happen Online: Nearly 53 percent of those surveyed indicated they donate online. Many of those surveyed (23 percent) also like to give in person; giving a check in the mail weighed in at 15 percent. Similar to supporting multiple causes, those surveyed also give through various channels.

Seventy-four attendees of the 2012 SXSW Interactive Festival were interviewed on camera, responding to four questions about donating to nonprofits, preferred causes and preferred donation channels. View the video of survey participants.
