Alexandria/Arlington Waste-to-Energy Facility Honored by OSHA With
Prestigious 'STAR' Designation for Outstanding Safety Practices
FAIRFIELD, N.J., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- On Tuesday,
November 9, the City of Alexandria and the County of Arlington's
975 ton-per-day waste-to- energy facility, Covanta
Alexandria/Arlington, operated by Covanta Energy Corporation, will
be honored by the Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OSHA) with its "STAR" designation, the
agency's highest honor given to power generating facilities with
outstanding health and safety practices. Covanta Alexandria's
designation as an OSHA "STAR" facility is an honor given to fewer
than one percent of all worksites in the United States and comes
following participation in the agency's Voluntary Protection
Program (VPP) and adherence to the highest health and safety
protocols in the industry. The Alexandria/Arlington waste-to-energy
facility launched participation in the VPP program in January of
2004 and was notified of OSHA's decision to be granted STAR status
in September of 2004. "Achieving VPP STAR recognition means that
Covanta Alexandria has achieved the very highest standards in
employee and workplace safety," said Tony Orlando, President and
CEO of Covanta Energy. "And it also means that Covanta Alexandria
employees have gone far beyond the norms of good practices and have
moved into the realm of true excellence, setting a standard for the
rest of the industry to follow." Covanta Alexandria/Arlington is
the third facility within Covanta's network of WTE facilities to
achieve VPP STAR recognition. The facility is operated for the City
of Alexandria and Arlington County. The facility takes the
non-recyclable portion of municipal solid waste that would
otherwise be destined for a landfill and converts it into clean,
renewable energy for over 25,000 homes. DATASOURCE: Covanta Energy
